Mon, 10 May 2010 21:06:22 -0700 'Starving yogi' astounds Indian scientists http://joowonsome.com/starving-yogi-astounds-indian-scientists-2 http://joowonsome.com/starving-yogi-astounds-indian-scientists-2
An 83-year-old Indian holy man who says he has spent seven decades without food or water has astounded a team of military doctors who studied him during a two-week observation period.

Prahlad Jani spent a fortnight in a hospital in the western India state of Gujarat under constant surveillance from a team of 30 medics equipped with cameras and closed circuit television.

During the period, he neither ate nor drank and did not go to the toilet.

"We still do not know how he survives," neurologist Sudhir Shah told reporters after the end of the experiment. "It is still a mystery what kind of phenomenon this is."

The long-haired and bearded yogi was sealed in a hospital in the city of Ahmedabad in a study initiated by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the state defence and military research institute.

The DRDO hopes that the findings, set to be released in greater detail in several months, could help soldiers survive without food and drink, assist astronauts or even save the lives of people trapped in natural disasters.

"(Jani's) only contact with any kind of fluid was during gargling and bathing periodically during the period," G. Ilavazahagan, director of India's Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), said in a statement.

Jani has since returned to his village near Ambaji in northern Gujarat where he will resume his routine of yoga and meditation. He says that he was blessed by a goddess at a young age, which gave him special powers.

During the 15-day observation, which ended on Thursday, the doctors took scans of Jani's organs, brain, and blood vessels, as well as doing tests on his heart, lungs and memory capacity.

"The reports were all in the pre-determined safety range through the observation period," Shah told reporters at a press conference last week.

Other results from DNA analysis, molecular biological studies and tests on his hormones, enzymes, energy metabolism and genes will take months to come through.

"If Jani does not derive energy from food and water, he must be doing that from energy sources around him, sunlight being one," said Shah.

"As medical practitioners we cannot shut our eyes to possibilities, to a source of energy other than calories."

Tue, 04 May 2010 18:20:08 -0700 What if study were fun and life easy? (1) http://joowonsome.com/what-if-study-were-fun-and-life-easy-1 http://joowonsome.com/what-if-study-were-fun-and-life-easy-1

By Mary-Jane Liddicoat

Have you ever heard someone say, ``What if study were fun and success easy?" If you said ``no,'' then you would be in the majority. But what if it ``were" possible? If you are curious then read on. I will share three simple tools to help you create this as a possibility.

Having worked in Seoul for 10 years and seen a stream of unhappy people trudging to work, school and university everyday, I began asking questions. Why are Korean families, workers, students, even young children stressed and depressed about just about everything?

Clearly the idea that study could be fun and success easy is not a common concept in Korea. I suspect most Koreans would get angry at me for even suggesting it. Where is the ``value" in fun and ease, they would say. Most people equate value with hardship, suffering and sacrifice.

How often have our parents, teachers and leaders told us that life is hard and we must sacrifice ourselves for the good of our children, our company, and our nation? I guess we would hear this everyday at least once. So it's no surprise we have this idea planted firmly in our heads.

What if the value of living a no-stress life of ease and joy was that you lived a longer, healthier, more productive and creative life? And what if this in turn increased the economic prosperity of your family, company, and nation? Would that be valuable?

Interesting different point of view?

It has been scientifically proven that stress and negative thoughts can make us sick. Knowing this, are you surprised that rates of chronic disease and ill health in Korea keep rising and Korea boasts one of the highest suicide rates in the OECD? Even those who have achieved ``success" ― film stars and singers ― are choosing suicide as an escape at rates seemingly higher than the national average.

So what if by the mere fact that we are constantly telling ourselves that our lives are only valuable if they are hard, that is exactly what we make them?

What would happen if we chose to think differently? Could we become healthier, more productive and creative? Could we become like Nobel Prize winners who view their 1000 ``failed" experiments with excitement and enthusiasm knowing that something is yet unknown, something which inspires them with joy to pursue? (As you know, Nobel Prizes are only awarded for discovering the unknown.)

So the first simple tool I will share is to ``consciously" look at your life differently and demand a different possibility.

Instead of waking up every morning, slipping unconsciously into the no-fun, hard, trauma and drama reality that everyone else chooses, what if every morning you said ``all of life comes to me with ease and joy and abundance?"

By saying this one thing, you are consciously saying: I choose differently ― I choose ease and fun and prosperity ― bring it on! Who knows what this simple shift in outlook might bring? How much more productive and creative might you be? Could you be free of tiredness and disease?

(There is one caveat: you have to really choose it. If you're one of many who love their hardship and suffering as a way of seeking attention, then this will not work until you give that up.)

Hey, this is free, it doesn't hurt you, and won't hurt anyone else, and so you would not try it for what reason? Who knows what will show up? What else could be truly possible for you?

nor does it mean that existence loses its colour in the slightest.  It simply means that,
instead of always being the plaything of our negative thoughts, moods, and temperaments,
we become their masters.

Thu, 01 Apr 2010 21:08:00 -0700 Wonderful class today with yogi tea to top it off http://joowonsome.com/wonderful-class-today-with-yogi-tea-to-top-it http://joowonsome.com/wonderful-class-today-with-yogi-tea-to-top-it

I just got home from a fantastic yoga class today. Everything just went well especially considering that my last class was a bit chaotic.

I turned on the music on low volume and it helped my teaching flow better.  The homemade yogi tea that I have brought was still being warmed up in the new electric pot I bought and it was filling the room with aromas of cardamoms, gingers, and many other goodness that went into the tea..  (I replaced the black tea with the green tea..a lot milder taste)

Many of the yoga sequence today included engaging your mula bandha.  Some of the postures are several variations of Shalabhasana(locust), Navasana(boat), and variation of reverse crunches…(I led them gradually going from their legs pointing to the ceiling to 60 degrees, then back to the ceiling to 45 degrees, back to the ceiling to 15 degress….till they were barely touching the ground…) The ending Pranayama was Breath of Fire to wake them up from drowsiness of Savasana.

After the class, I served the yogi tea to the students.  I brought the soy milk and honey and it was a hit.  It not only nourished our body with good ayurvedic benefits, but also made the students hang around more after the class which built a good energy in the classroom… Having that 5 minutes sipping their tea, they had the opportunity to ask each other about how they felt after the practice and reviewed what made them feel better and what was difficult (I sometimes eve dropped on their conversation…which was kind of fun actually..) The power of yogi tea: it builds the yoga community…  The best part of today was seeing people smile and telling me how their body feels so much better each day and especially today..It made me feel so happy and I am growing deeper love for doing what I do. I feel very privileged and lucky that I can share the knowledge I learned from my teachers - thank you Sadani, Wayo, Mark, Prema, and many other teachers of yogayoga studio in Austin.

Fri, 19 Mar 2010 19:17:00 -0700 Good day http://joowonsome.com/good-day-994 http://joowonsome.com/good-day-994

Today’s an excellent day.

I had two classes back to back and both with excellent groups of students.

The Hospital English Conversation class was a tough class as my Physical Therapy students missed two classes due to their orientation and meetings.  I told them they have a lot to catch up and our pace was pretty fast. The good thing is that they are enthusiastic about learning English.  I can actually discuss vocab terms like menopause, estrogen, etc. with these guys because they are adults. I really enjoyed explaining them the difference between testosterone and estrogen.  I think I am an effective teacher - I can feel it in my gut.

After the two back-to-back lectures, I had to teach English to the professors in my department.  To my surprise, Justin was the only one there and it was our second time together.  He ended up evaluating my postures and gave me a really good insight on how to improve my posture. He said my left shoulder has anterior rotation and I knew exactly how it happened.  That’s the side I sleep on and for the past year, I propped up my body using my left arm to use the computer for many hours.  I knew it wasn’t a good idea and when he mentioned it to me, I could definitely see it.

Justin said he heard from the department head professor that I want to learn more about anatomy and physiology.  I casually joked about the old thick Gray’s Anatomy book he had in his bookshelf.  He then said to me, “take it.”  I could’t believe it!  I have always wanted this book…..

 Gray's Anatomy Book

I can’t wait to get cracking on this book and learn some medical terms.  I love the illustrations in this book..very colorful and detailed.  I may start to do some anatomy illustrations like Albinus and Vesalius…hehe…they are awesome if you haven’t seen their work..

Anyhoo…heard the great news that my English yoga class is a hit (my class is anywhere between 15-20 students) among the professors and I feel that all of their eyes are on me.. oh the pressure.. This will only push me to study harder and prepare better classes for them.

Today is Friday, time to eat some galbi and chill out with friends over Hite! Yes..that’s my choice of beer..not Cass.  hehe. Cheers.

Happiness is the result of inner maturity. It depends on us alone, and requires patient work, carried out from day to day. Happiness must be built, and this requires time and effort. In the long term, happiness and unhappiness are therefore a way of being, or a life skill.
